NORTH MYMMS BOWLS CLUB CELEBRATE 75 YEARS
The curtain came down on our 75th Anniversary season in late September with a very well supported and competitive Captains’ Day organised by Delsa Cooper and Peter Stokes, the top rink appropriately skipped by chairman Geoff Matthews. There followed a hot supper giving the opportunity to pay tribute to Peter and Delsa for all their work and efforts leading their respective teams through such a very special year
Highlights included the celebratory matches against the Herts County Presidents team and representative teams from St Albans & District Men and Ladies Bowling Associations. All proved very successful, even though the original game against the District men was completely washed out and had to be rearranged, and we are very grateful to all three associations for bringing teams to play us. Also in August four lady club members organised and catered for a special informal dinner which was much enjoyed by the 70 plus members who attended.
It could possibly be said that the match results were not as good as we might have wished in the various county and district leagues and competitions but we must bear in mind that we are going through a transitional period, giving new bowlers match experience and introducing them to competitive play. There was however still much enjoyable bowling throughout the full programme of competition and friendly matches with a number of kind comments made as to how the green was benefiting from the early season remedial work carried out by the Parish Council.
In the District Finals club members were involved on 2 occasions. Peter Stokes triumphed in the Officers Singles against Peter Thompson from Townsend, scoring the winning shot on the 27th end. Unfortunately John Penfold, Geoff Matthews and David Cooper lost out to a strong Townsend team in the Triples final.
Undoubtedly two members dominated our own club finals. Diann Howell contested 5 events and won 4 of them, the Ladies Championship, Ladies Handicap and 3 Wood Singles and together with Val Atkinson the Ladies Pairs. Her 5th match at the end of a tough programme proved a step too far and she lost the 2 Wood Singles against David Cooper. Peter Stokes won all 4 of his events, the Men’s Championship and Men’s Handicap both against Duncan Race by very small margins, the Mymms Trophy and together with Tom Peppard the Men’s Pairs. Great bowling by both Diann and Peter who are to be congratulated on their very fine performances throughout these competitions.
The AGM on the 6th December 2013 was well attended by 44 members. Chairman Geoff Matthews was re-elected with a full committee. Donations totaling £120.80 were made to Isabel Hospice by members, instead of buying each other Christmas Cards.
A lot of hard work by many members but we can all look back on 2013 as a very successful and enjoyable 75th anniversary.
A full programme of competition and friendly matches has been arranged for the entire season.
